Agustin Rebecca Lakawa
English is one of four official languages in multi-ethnic Singapore the others are Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil. English is the dominant language, being used as the medium of education at all levels; the language of government, business, employment, and the lingua franca for inter-ethnic and often intra-ethnic communication. It is generally understood that the government has promoted English as the dominant language in part to try to develop a national identity that is not biased towards one particular ethnic group. However, the vast influence of Singlish as a linguistic marker of Singapore’s identity and culture has resulted in a contradiction to the government argument that Standard English needs to be linguistically connected to the world of business, technology and knowledge of the people in Singapore. This article presents an argument as to why there is a contradiction between the government and the people of Singapore towards the use of Singlish as well as the impact it has towards international visitors to Singapore. This is coupled with the campaign from the government that warned of the potential dangers of a decline in the level of Standard English. The warned of the Singaporean government represents the misused of English in the community which is eventually affected the level of education of the community.
